Design-y people…

Hello all,

This is a preliminary request I’m sending, just to a few of you to start getting the word out about a project we’re busy with…and you can help out in one very simple way.

You can DRINK MORE…and, then, save your bottles OR tetrapaks.

We’re looking for wine bottles, large beer bottles (we’ll also take small beer bottles but large is preferable, so drink up, lads & lasses), and tetrapaks (the asceptic, box containers some juices are packaged in.) We will use the bottles as part of wall construction for the addition we’re going to build for Monica’s house in Khayelitsha. Monica is our domestic worker here in Fresnaye, and for the past few months, we’ve been designing and planning a sustainable, as-green-as-possible addition to her home in Site B (Khay…) that currently houses 10 people in a 2-bedroom RDP house. You can check out more of this at http://www.makedesign.co.za. We’re attempting to source as much material as we can that is local AND that would otherwise be dumped in the landfill OR recycled OR is just sitting people’s houses/garages/etc. We’ll use the tetrapaks as part of the insulation in the roof.

So, if you would be so kind as to set aside a cardboard box or bag, and collect:
wine bottles
beer bottles (large)
tetrapaks
then we’ll make a plan to come collect from you.

You can also help out in other ways if you’re interested, so let me (or Charles -> charles@makesdesign.co.za) know…I’m considering all of you the creative “hub” with your own various networks, so feel free to spread the word.

Hope everyone is well and staying dry…thanks for reading this!
cheers,
Hannah

Be your own source of energy

Found this really interesting article on the guardian.co.uk:

Take a walk - and charge up your phone

A knee brace which can generate electricity as you walk, creating enough power to charge mobile phones and medical devices, has been developed by scientists.”

Microsoft Excel is a program designed to track and compute information, but here I am using Excel as a drawing tool.

*New* Rebound Notebook

My new Rebound Book: Cover

I got myself a beautiful Rebound Book as a notebook for Apartment.

Justine and Ross’s concept is really nice:
“We make handbound, recycled blank books.

The idea is really simple - we find beautiful, neglected hardcover books and re-bind them with a creamy, environmentally friendly paper. The result is a durable, totally unique journal, diary or sketchbook.”

My new Rebound Book: Inside cover

When I went to pick up the notebook, it was nicely wrapped, and Justine and Ross included the previous book too so I can read what the cover used to be about. I absolutely adore the idea and the notebook looks great and feels so nice writing in :)

Check out their selection of beautiful notebooks at Rebound Books.

Recyled and pimped!

bordbar.jpg

Loving the re-purposed recycled airline hot trolleys that Bordbar produces.

Bordbar are original airplane trolleys that have been in use. Dents and scratches proof their use between the wings. Therefore, each trolley is somehow unique. Tokyo, Sydney or New York, or “only” London – Paris, the functional service-trolleys have travelled the globe.

Through Bordbar these original trolleys come to your place. The capabilities seem to be unlimited.

Bordbar takes advantage of the high requirements that are demanded to the trolleys by aviation. Premium material guarantees stability and longevity.”

I’m really happy to see more recycling and re-purposing happening, commercially. Now I need to save up ;)
