It’s time to B. Sharpa!!
Once in a while an artist comes along with the vision and ability to turn a genre on its head whilst taking it back to its roots. Ben Sharpa has achieved this with his debut solo offering, B. Sharpa, an iconic album that pays homage to the best socially conscious lyrical traditions of hip hop whilst innovating a completely fresh sound that Sharpa himself calls ‘robot army music’…

Rattex’s album cover by Apartment (Art direction, photography & design). Additional post-prod by Stéphane Giner
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
It’s time for the son of the ghetto to light up the nation!!
Rattex fulfills the promise so much South African hip hop has failed to deliver by serving up one of the tightest, most complete and relevant albums of its genre ever released on the continent. Rattex, or Rah to his friends and fans, brings his own unique variety of deadly lyrical poison to the South African hip hop game with his debut solo album, Bread and Butter.

We (Apartment and Pioneer Unit ) have been hard at work for the past month, finishing off 2 albums to be released mid-October.
One of the album is Bread and Butter, by Rattex for which we designed this typographic treatment.
Full album artwork to be published soon :)

There’s a nice feature on The Realist in the latest issue of One Small Seed.
“The Realist deals in bruising combustible beats, caustic rhymes and moments of jarring beauty.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself!
Go and buy One Small Seed, it’s definitely one of SA’s best publications.

Nice article on Milanese‘s upcoming EP release by Chrome Kids.
Chrome Kids say:
Keep an eye out for a new EP coming soon on Square Records from UK super Producer Milanese. With some classic previous releases on Warp and Planet Mu that have pushed the boundaries of what he terms ‘UK Bass Music,’ the new EP has a lot to live up to but early signs are good indeed.
Milanese has been working with South African rapper Ben Sharpa on tracks and at least one ‘Reload Beat’ has made it onto the EP. The track is a dark grinding, hop, glitch and jump type tune that wouldn’t sound out of place bumping out of a Mad Max vehicle. You can check it out on Milanese’s MySpace… trust me this is BIG.
I’ve heard one other collaboration called ‘Wonderful World’ up on Sharpa’s MySpace which is a lovely Industrial Grime track with a bounce like a turbo injected pogo stick on a brothel bed, but not sure if that’s going to be included on the Milanese EP or not…
Read the entire blog post here: http://chromekids.blogspot.com/2008/08/talking-milanese.html
Opti wrote a nice bio / intro of Ben Sharpa, for his upcoming european EP release and AAVA got a nice shout out…
Opti says:
“Jarring Effects is about to release a brilliant Ben Sharpa 12″. It will feature tracks by our beloved beatmaker Sibot & Milanese . I really can’t wait this release. It will also feature a wonderfull and proper artwork by the brilliant design bureau Apartment Studios . We have it all : Killer MC, killer beats, killer artwork and even more : faith, trust and shared conceptions of music as a passion AND business… we’re gonna rock you all !”
Looking forward to the release too - we’re very pleased and proud of the Ben Sharpa EP cover and can’t wait to share it :)

I’ve been working on the next EP 12” cover design for Ben Sharpa (and I’m so very excited about the results! Can’t wait to share, yay!) for the last few days.
I’ve been looking for the font used on CCTV monitor but couldn’t find it… so Viktor kindly recommended Super Duty Text from YouWorkForThem.
Although it is not the original CCTV font, it works really nice and has a super fresh feel to it.
Can’t wait to share the new EP cover design!

We’re proud to show off our amended design for Rattex‘s 7784 mixtape cover!
At the first release we thought that having a front cover for a mixtape would be enough but we decided we’d like to share more of Rattex’s goodness. So we’ve made the cover double sided, and we’re rather pleased with the results!
Thanks to Digital Bureau for an awesome printing job and quick turnaround!

The recent wave of brutal xenophobic attacks on fellow African brothers and sisters in South Africa has left 56 people dead, 650 injured and tens of thousands of innocent people displaced and living in fear. The situation is fast becoming a humanitarian crisis.
The South African government has begun to set up ‘shelters’ to house people seeking refuge from the violence. These ‘shelters’ are being described by international aid agencies as ‘refugee camps’.
The Hip Hop community has come together to raise its voice in protest against this unacceptable situation. We want to let the world know that we condemn these attacks, and that whilst many South Africans are living in situations of unacceptable poverty and hardship, turning on fellow Africans is not the solution.
Pioneer Unit is supporting various anti-xenophobia initiatives. Rattex and Ben Sharpa will be performing at 2 awareness and fund-raising gigs this weekend (see below). We have also contributed tracks to Emile YX’s Heal the Hood CD and book project (more details soon). We will also be contributing to Nymabz’s forthcoming anti-xenophobia mixtape as well as releasing our own material. Keep it locked for more info.

The party on Saturday was OFF THE HOOK!! Big ups to Loggaheadz and everyone involved (Johnny Steaknife, Garlic Brown, Enmity and Diddi Yang) - definitely the most banging party since the Planetary Assault Launch.
People keep telling us that Hip Hop club nights just don’t work and that you need to make superficial pop music to bring in crowds and sponsors. We’ve never believed these people and we never will!
Naturally Pioneer Unit represented to the fullest with ill performances from The Realist, KONFAB, Ben Sharpa & Rattex.

Well, to round off a week of photography at Apartment we’re happy to present the press photos for The Realist. Read on for their bio and download free their new track Decay in Daisies.
The photos were shot outside the military base in Tamboerskloof. Sinister and Kid had been there before and we all loved the wall and the grimey but beautiful and cinematic feel of the place, perfect for The Realist.
On one of the shot we were joined by Ben Sharpa who features on 5 and half steps, another master production by The Realist.
Don’t forget to click on the photos to enlarge.
The Realist is here to tell it like it is. They are the political party that doesn’t want your vote. They are the religion that doesn’t want you kneeling at their altar. They are the uncomfortable truth that you don’t want to hear.
Taking no prisoners in their war of attrition against the superficiality and moral hypocrisy of polite society and popular culture, The Realist stay true to their name.
Part hip-hop crew, part rock group, The Realist is producer, The Triplet of Bellville (TO, and rappers Kid Clever and Sinister Dexter.
Wearing their anger and disgust like a badge of honour, The Realist defy genres with their bone-crushing fusion of glitch-hop and electronica. With the power of an apocalyptic opera, their sound is characterised by heavy electronic bass lines underpinning orchestral soundscapes layered with powerful lyrics and tortured death metal vocals.
TOB (Triplet of Bellville)
With influences ranging from Chopin, Grieg and Rachmaninov to Richard Devine, Amon Tobin and Autechre, TOB is the musical force behind The Realist. Always striving to push boundaries, TOB gives life, depth and emotion to his music by incorporating live instrumentation and vocalists.
TOB always seeks to evoke extreme emotions with his music. His background as a sound engineer ensures that The Realist’s sound is as technically pure as it is emotionally charged.
Sinister Dexter
Sinister Dexter‘s name is derived from the Latin words meaning ‘left’ and ‘right’ respectively. The classical roots of these words also imply ‘evil’ and ‘good’.
The theologian of the crew, Sinister Dexter seeks to explore the religious morality and blinkered conformity he experienced growing up in the Cape hinterland.
Labeled the dirty white rap machine gun, Sinister Dexter is the byproduct of modern society, a reflection of what the world has become. Unafraid to tackle taboos or speak his mind, you may wish to bury your head in the sand or look the other way, but Sinister Dexter will always be right there to remind you that life isn’t all blues skies and pretty flowers.
Kid Clever
Originally hailing from Kimberley, *Kid Clever, the self-proclaimed, ‘short sht with the biggest mouth in the business’, is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.
Always willing to put his life on the line to make a point, Kid Clever applies his razor-sharp street smarts to social ills of all kinds.
The vicious attack dog of the crew, Kid will battle anything that moves. With his ‘never say die’ attitude, even if you could outwit this Clever Kid, you’d never manage to silence him.

We couldn’t miss taking a few photos at the Wordsworth, Ben Sharpa and Rattex gig at The Assembly last Thursday (April 3rd).
From the Pioneer Unit website:
Cape Town was blessed with a typically massive performance by Lyricist Lounge all-star Wordsworth. The night, which also featured Pioneer Unit artists, Ben Sharpa and Rattex, was organised by Dominique from Unlearn Agency who cleverly took advantage of the fact that Words was in South Africa to judge the finals of the Sprite Emcee Africa battle competition.
Read the full review of the party on Pioneer Unit website
The performances were full of energy, stage presence and hot tracks. Wordsworth was amazing, as always (I saw him for the first time ever at the Tri-Continental gig at the CTICC) especially when he launched into freestyle and invited other rappers to join him on stage.

I watched Channel O Emcee Africa battle last night.
This time it was the South African leg. Amongst other performances was Ben Sharpa doing his thing against Aramiz (watch it here).

The lyrical quality was good, the entertainment level of the emcees was tight and it was so nice seeing the judges really appreciating some of the emcees, laughing and going mad. Respect. No american sounding emcees (we’re in Africa, come on!!) made it to the top either which added to the show, although everybody had to rap in English, which is fair enough in this occasion anyway.
Despite going out, you can still vote for Ben Sharpa now! to be a WildCard entry in the final. Show your support for Ben by going to the Channel O websit
