Camagu!

Camagu is the first single from Driemanskap’s debut album, Igqabhukil’ Inyongo.

The track is about the importance of respecting and celebrating your culture and its traditions, even if you are a modern urban youth.

Rattex - Streets / Music video shoot

Another weekend, another video shoot! This weekend Pioneer Unit shot a video for Streets by Rattex with our new partners in crime, Greenhouse Productions.

As the name suggests, Streets is about life on the streets of Rattex‘s hood, Khayelitsha. Don’t get it twisted though, this Nyambz-produced track is dedicated to everyone in every hood living the street life.

Rattex believes in representing the reality of life in South Africa and that’s why the people love him. Naturally we shot the video entirely on location on the streets of Khayelitsha. Check out some behind the scenes photos…

I’m not sure how this happened, I was busy taking photos with Rattex, when Garth and the crew told us to follow him. We walked to double storey shack in Site B which was a gym! Bonga, who runs Sopumelela Gym, kindly agreed to show off his boxing skills for the video.

Camagu Video Shoot - Driemanskap

A few weeks ago we watched the video for Rocaflow by our friends Ill Skillz. The quality of the cinematography, art direction and editing blew us away so we tracked down the people responsible, Greenhouse Productions. After an initial meeting we decided that we had to work with them on the video for Driemanskap’s first single, Camagu.

Camagu is about the importance of respecting your traditions, your culture and your elders, even if you are a young, urban hip hop head. Driemanskap wanted to shoot in a rural setting and the Director, Garth, happened to know a perfect location on a farm in Khayelitsha.

The shoot started at sunrise and went on until midnight. Despite the long hours, everyone gave 100% and judging by the footage we have seen so far, this video is going to set incredibly high standards for us and the rest of the SA hip hop industry to follow.

A massive thank you to everyone at Greenhouse Productions (Garth, Niklas, Christian, Karl, Tami, Bert and Adrian). Also, huge thanks to Sivu and Kanyi for styling, the dancers, the extras (Dre, Bizzah, Siya, Kanyi, Lulama) and everyone else who came through to support - we really couldn’t do this without you!

Milanese Featuring Ben Sharpa Reviewed in Mixmag (UK)

Milanese Ft. Ben Sharpa in Mixmag (UK)

Our good friend and collaborator, Milanese, has just released his latest work, the Lockout EP. The EP features our very own Ben Sharpa after the two performed at various festivals across Europe last summer. This is what Mixmag had to say…

Razor sharp techy dubstep with killer MC. Milanese, like a more techno-oriented version of The Bug, has made some of the rawest tracks out there, and his sound keeps getting sharper. This mini-album features intense, virtuoso rapping from RQM and rising South African MC, Ben Sharpa, and electronic sounds that writhe and warp around the beat like living things. Dark, strange and very wonderful.”

Ben features production by Milanese on his EP, The Sharpaganda Theory: Lesson 1 which was released a few weeks ago. Ben also features Milanese on his full-length album, B. Sharpa which comes out in Europe in February 2009.

For a taste of what to expect from Ben and Milanese, check out this video shot on Milanese’s phone at the Dour festival in Belgium…

Welcome to Khaltsha’ Video Shoot

We had a great day shooting the video for Welcome to Khaltsha in Khayelitsha yesterday. For those who don’t know, ‘Khaltsha’ is the local slang for ‘Khayelitsha’. After a bit of a late start we managed to complete our shot list by 6.30pm, just in time to catch the second half of Arsenal beating Chelsea!

We started the day at the Khayelitsha sign near Lookout Hill before moving to a variety of locations including Lookout Hill itself, Vuyani’s meat spot, the Site C taxi rank, the barber’s shop in Mandela Park and various spaza shops. We ended up at Solly’s Tavern in Mandela Park where Rattex and Kritsi got on stage and broke up the DJ’s house set to perform Welcome to Khaltsha. Initially people seemed a bit skeptical as the house beats gave way to Hipe’s banging hip hop anthem, but as soon as people heard the first chorus where Rah proudly proclaims, “Khayelitsha made me”, everyone went crazy.

Everywhere we went, Rah got nothing but love and good vibes. While we were shooting people constantly jumped in to the shots to dance and hype up the hooks. The enthusiasm and pride people expressed that one of their own sons was making moves and representing them was amazing.

We hope we’ve captured a slice of life in Khayelitsha to show South Africa and the rest of the world.

Get Down’ Video Shoot

This weekend we shot the video for Get Down, the first single from Rattex’s album, Bread and Butter. The track is a club banger so we wanted to have some fun with the video - we got the slick rides, the hot girls, the fresh dances and of course, the high-energy performances.

Get Down features Kritsi Ye’Spaza, who some of you might know from Lungelo’s video Dirty Girl. Kritsi is an amazingly talented and energetic performer who is bursting with kasi swagger - it really was non-stop fun working with him.

Anne-Sophie and Nick chose a clean and graphic look with a simple palette of white, red and black to act as a backdrop for the performances. The video also features a new dance called the ‘Scooter’ (which you can start learning here).

We shot the video at the amazingly equipped Propaganda Studios out near Durbanville. The owner, Brad, even let us use his beautiful 1970 limited edition Camaro Z28 (and his golf cart!) for the shoot.

We’re really excited about this video as the footage is looking amazing. The track is banging too so we’re sure this is going to be a summer smash.

Anyway, watch out for the video for Get Down in the next couple of weeks. In the mean time check out the photos…

zZz is playing: Grip

Tom Roope from The Rumpus Room sent me the link to this aaaaaaamazing video this morning, thanks a mill! :)

From their youtube page:
zZz is playing: Grip, is the first video of Roel Wouters aka Xelor. it’s a one take, top shot music video with trampoline gymnasts simulating typical video effects. The video has been recorded live, as part of the opening ‘Nederclips’ at the Stedelijk museum ‘s-Hertogenbosch SM’S (curated by Bart Rutten).

The project was commissioned by the TAX-videoclipfonds. The important
criteria were that the audience at the opening would be able to witness the whole shoot, and that the videoclip would be added to the exhibition
immediately after the shoot. This meant we had no option to reshoot or edit if something went wrong. This made the whole crew so focussed that we
performed even better than any of us could have imagined.

As Tom puts it: So analogue but about the digital world.
Seriously good!

New KONFAB Video - runonsentence

We are proud to present our latest video, runonsentence by the mighty KONFAB.

We shot this video while we were on tour in London last year. One night we went round to see my good friends the Chandon brothers, Theo and Alex. At about 2 am (after a few beers and many blunts) we decided it would be a good idea to shoot a music video.

Alex is an infamous underground horror film director, having made a number of cult classics including Pervirella* and Cradle of Fear.

London_082
KONFAB gets taken on a guided tour of Al’s studio (click for larger image).

Check out the full set of photos from our London tour on Flickr.

Anyway,,, we just saw the video for the first time tonight and we love it. It perfectly captures the surreal and relentlessly hypnotic essence of the track. KONFAB’s debut album will be out in the second or third quarter of 2008. Keep it locked for more information.

*(Not many people know this, but I was actually a Ninja in Pervirella (check the credits!)).

Super hot new Pet Shop Boys music video

psb1.jpg psb2.jpg psb3.jpg

Great new video for Pet Shop Boys by The Rumpus Room & The Sweet Shop Films,,

From the PSB site:
“The video sets out to amplify the message of the song.
The piece was conceived and created by The Rumpus Room as a multi platform project, having versions of the film for small hand held devices as well as large resolution screens. It is both a traditional piece of film and an interactive portal to online information and campaigns.

The video has over 100 QR Codes that are subliminal when watched in real time, but accessible to interact with if you navigate through the film using time controllers. The QR Codes are organised into sections that relate to specific issues of civil liberties.”

How We Roll / Music video shoot

Wow!! What a weekend! :)

After only one week of preparation, and a couple of hours at Videolounge for gear check (thanks for the rental!), the weekend of shoot for the first single of the Planetary Assault album on Pioneer Unit started,,

09062007223

First we went to Epping, at Bucks-4-Tyres rim, mags and tyres shop. Thank you so much to Eeshaam for organising the location and big thanks to Mr and Mrs Bucks for letting us invade their shop on the busiest day of the week! They moved around the rims, put spinners on 24” for us and polished chromes.

09062007223

We got the shot wrapped under 2 hours and moved back to town to Mercury Live. Kevin and Morné kindly opened up the club earlier for us.

We had about 5 hours to set up and shoot some high energy footage for the choruses. Thanks to Eeshaam doing an outstanding and unexpected job as assistant director, everything went smoothly and I could concentrate on the setting up the shots and making sure it all looked outstanding. Eeshaam really has a way to explain what I have in mind to a crowd and get them hyper and excited about helping us out. He’s got such a way with people and is even telepathic!! ;) Exactly what you need on a busy day of shooting!

We started with some stage performance by Jaak and Konfab, followed by some crowd shots (THANK YOU so much to everybody who turned up and showed so much energy and enthusiasm for the shot!). We also got blessed by Ameen and his krump dancers showing off their sickest moves (and the best pairs of trainers I have seen in a while. Stylish!!). We also got blessed with a group of female dancers who had a special choregraphy for the track. We did some cameos in an unexpected location (thanks D and Konfab) and even got a visit by Mizi, Simone and Blacklez from Hype Magazine / Joburg. It was very nice hooking up and thanking them personally after they did a feature on the Go Against Us video in this June 2007’s issue. Thanks guys!

We then finished the Mercury Live shoot in the back office, as per the press release photoshoot, where we filmed Dplanet and Konfab performing the intro of the track. Once again, some startling performances by Konfab!

Konfab, still made up, enjoying some rest at Chef Pon's

We ended up the day at Chef Pon’s on Kloof for some well deserved Asian food, then went home for an early night and a battery charging session.

The charging corner

We started the second day of shoot at Paarl at Jaak’s place. We had fun with a braai scene (I can’t wait to show you all the scene where Jaak holds the boerewors roll with pride and joy, I just couldn’t keep a straight face!!). Jaak also made a special effort with his costume and wore a very tight fitting pair of blue jeans, some takkies and white shirt. Apparently a very typical outfit from his birth place ;) Thanks for this sacrifice!! We also got very lucky with the weather.

By lunchtime, there was quite a big crowd watching the filming outside of Jaak’s house. (Btw, thanks to Jaak’s aunt for letting us roam freely around the house for such a long time too!).

Dplanet decided to use the kids for the wheel pushing shot. Eeshaam rallied all the kids at the crossroad and made them run down the street, chasing Jaak pushing his wheels. It was absolutely fantastic and so much fun to capture. I love this kind of unexpected action in shoots,, when things just fall in place and more than what you planned happens! Thanks kids!! We then made our way to Paarl’s hood where we got permission to shoot. We parked the car, I took the camera on my shoulder and off we went.

The place was really graphic in its architecture and colours, then the amount of kids surrounding us was insane. Everybody was enjoying Jaak’s track and joined in! We even had to ask everybody to form a circle around Jaak so I could see him,, The kids wouldnt let us go afterwards, they all wanted their photos taken, so we obliged for a while. We also left a couple of CDs behind as thank you gifts. I must say I had a little pinch in my heart seeing so many people sharing the same thing and showing so much love and support just like this,, it was awesome!!

We drove back to town under very heavy rain to Marvel on Long Street for our last location of the shoot. Linda did a cameo for Dice Life, throwing the dices on the pool table. Konfab and Jaak did some performance shots in front of the pool table with everybody playing foetsball in the background.

After that we crammed loads of the rappers on the Planetary Assault project in the tiny Marvel toilets and asked them to go crazy. The shots look like an undulating see of mad rappers. We did a few more cameos in the looks and finished off with the last cameos in the Marvel booths. Thanks Val and Yan for letting us use Marvel and getting the place cleaned up earlier for us :)

Go Against Us music video on MTV Base

trusenz_goagainstus.jpg

We’re very proud to announce that our first music video for East London based rap artist Trusenz is out now!

Tune in from the 16th of May!lusive to MTV Base - broadcast starting at 15:00 CAT on Wednesday 16th May.

Apartment directed, animated and designed this video:
Trusenz’s latest video is a visual representation of the ‘battle’ theme where Tru lays down the gauntlet asking “Who wanna go against us?”

The artist, shot ion green screen, is depicted in a surreal but gritty urban environment, created with re-touched photographs of Cape Town composited and animated in After Effects.

As his power increases Tru grows in size and is joined by his army of clones supported by fighter jets. The video ends with Trusenz destroying the city Godzilla-style.

You can watch the video online on YouTube: Go Against Us music video
